Space and Symmetry

This made me curious. NASA has scheduled a media teleconference Wednesday, May 14, at 1 p.m. EDT, to announce the discovery of an object in our Galaxy astronomers have been hunting for more than 50 years. Here is the link but it doesn’t say much more.

More space news; European probe finds missing matter. It’s amazing how much we don’t know about the universe.

Is the night sky darkest in the direction opposite the Sun? The answer is no. Here is a picture of the gegenschein which is a faint glow that appears at that spot.

One of the things we used to do when I first got the equipment to capture and manipulate full color images was to take a picture of someone’s face and mirror the left or right half. Even people with very symmetrical faces will look like two different people with two right halves or two left halves. This article is about why symmetrical faces are sexy. I suppose it’s no surprise that the golden ratio overlays I posted about earlier are completely symmetric.

Here is another extreme car. VW plans to sell a carbon fiber car which gets 238 mpg.

Here is why you should not store your tomatoes and cucumbers in the refrigerator.

This is a cool gallery of tiny grains of sand from around the world.

I’ve seen some of these before but this is one of the better collections of pictures of people hauling huge things.

In 1761 Benjamin Franklin invented the glass armonica. It’s a musical instrument which works in a similar way to rubbing your wet finger around the rim of a wine glass.

Finally, I’m not sure I’d really want to stand there.
